Gbc marathon: So I really appreciated the top-down driving mechanics of this game, which I honestly think should be explored more even in contemporary titles. Of course the tiny screen of the Game Boy makes it a little difficult to understand where you are going with the toy car, but the developers have inserted a sort of directional arrow in the top left that It makes it very easy to understand which is the right path. But perhaps it also turns out to be an easy shortcut, because I often found myself driving looking at that arrow instead of the road itself. That said, the graphics are pretty basic and the pixel art is definitely not the best. I honestly didn't even think it was that fun while I was playing it, in fact it seemed pretty easy to get through these courses which are practically all circles. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the tournament mode, which at the end of each race gives you the chance to improve your vehicle. This simple addition clicked with me and made me want to keep playing, so much so that I think I'm halfway through the game. The enemies are ultimately not that smart and are quite easy to beat but at the same time it is still a very fun game. If I had done it, I might have done without the blue UI bar altogether. The sounds are pretty basic, it's basically the sound of the engine, which I always find very bad in a Game Boy game, because it's basically just noise. The game also offers the possibility to buy different vehicles, all 4x4, the possibility to give yourself a name and there is also a scoreboard. So I have to say that all in all It has more stuff than I ever expected. It's not a masterpiece, but it's definitely a nice little game that the developers have definitely put some time and love into. The only shame is the terrible graphics.
