Alan Wake Remastered is difficult to recommend, mainly because so much of the game is built around combat, yet the combat itself is extremely lackluster. For something that becomes such an integral part of the experience, it feels repetitive, clunky, and rarely enjoyable. Fighting random possessed objects does not help either, and the game constantly throws an insane amount of bad items at you instead of making the gameplay feel rewarding. The camera is also incredibly awful, which makes the already weak combat even more annoying. Most of the instructions are basically just “go from A to B" and because the actual gameplay is mostly bad, I constantly wished there was more focus on the story and less on the repetitive combat. The repetition becomes genuinely exhausting, especially because the roads feel incredibly large and some episodes feel like they have no end. The writing does not make things much better. The dialogue is corny, and the game tries to force empathy for characters who mostly feel like stereotypes. Because of that, the emotional parts rarely land, and the story does not always feel strong enough to carry the tedious gameplay around it. After playing through it, I cannot recommend Alan Wake Remastered. The remaster itself feels cheap, especially for a 2025 release. It feels more like a port than a proper remaster, since the graphics are not even significantly better and the gameplay still feels awful. For a game with such a strong reputation, this version feels surprisingly low quality and ridiculous. 3.5/10
