Sonic Unleashed

Sonic Unleashed is, without question, my favourite entry in the Sonic series. What makes it stand out to me is the way progression is handled through both Sonic’s daytime stages and the Werehog’s nighttime gameplay. The upgrade system allows you to level up speed, strength, and abilities, and you genuinely feel the impact of those improvements. As Sonic becomes faster and more responsive, and the Werehog grows stronger with expanded combat options and increased durability, the sense of progression feels earned and rewarding rather than artificial. The contrast between the high-speed daytime levels and the more combat-focused nighttime stages gives the game a unique identity. The daytime sections perfectly capture the thrill of momentum and spectacle that the franchise is known for, with cinematic set pieces and tightly designed boost gameplay. Meanwhile, the Werehog stages introduce a more methodical pace, focusing on platforming, combos, and enemy encounters. While this gameplay style was divisive at launch, it adds variety and depth to the overall experience when viewed as part of the game’s broader design. The story is straightforward, heartfelt, and accessible, making it easy for anyone to follow. Sonic’s journey to restore the world alongside Chip delivers emotional moments without becoming overly complicated. The global setting, with its beautifully themed hub areas inspired by real-world cultures, gives the adventure a grand and memorable scale. Having now completed the story for the eighth time, I can confidently say its charm and presentation continue to hold up. I’m currently working through the Hot Dog Missions, which provide an additional layer of challenge and replayability. These trials push players to refine their mastery of both gameplay styles, encouraging precision, speed, and optimisation. They extend the life of the game significantly for those who want to fully complete it. Despite the criticism it received in the past, particularly regarding the Werehog mechanics, I believe the game has aged far better than many initially gave it credit for. Now that more players have revisited it with a broader perspective, there’s a growing appreciation for what it achieved. In my opinion, *Sonic Unleashed* is a genuinely strong entry in the franchise — ambitious, heartfelt, and mechanically satisfying — and absolutely deserving of recognition as a standout Sonic title.
